Frequently asked questions

How to use Torii Atlas and plan a shrine visit.

Is Torii Atlas free? Do I need an account?

Browsing, searching, comparison and device-local saving are free. No account is needed. Shrine admission, prayer services, amulets and travel costs are separate.

How do I find and compare shrines?

Search using a Japanese or English shrine name, then narrow the results by region, prefecture, prayer tradition or highlights. Add up to three shrines to compare. The comparison helps you choose; it does not calculate a travel route or rank religious benefits.

Can I save my choices or share a comparison?

Choose Save to keep one comparison and one search in this browser. Saving again replaces that item. There is no account sync or offline page storage; private browsing or clearing site data may remove saved items. To share a comparison, copy its URL. Opening that URL on another device restores the candidates, not your locally saved items.

Does the estimated visit time include travel?

Unless the entry says otherwise, the range excludes travel to the shrine. Read the scope shown beside the estimate: queues, ema preparation, formal prayers and paid areas may be excluded. These are trip-planning estimates, not official durations. Do not simply add parent-shrine and subsidiary-shrine times when they share walking routes.

Is the nearby-shrine distance a walking distance?

No. It is an approximate straight-line distance between representative locations recorded for shrines listed on this site. Up to three candidates within 1 km are shown, nearest first. It does not account for entrances, roads, stairs or detours. Confirm a usable route in a map service and on site. Related subsidiary shrines are handled separately from ordinary nearby candidates.

Is this an official shrine website? Can I book a visit here?

Torii Atlas is an independent travel guide. It does not represent the listed shrines or accept prayer-service, tour or accommodation bookings. Contact the shrine or relevant service directly for reservations and current arrangements.

Are opening hours and fees always up to date?

Entries cite sources and show check dates, but changes may occur after checking. Grounds, counters, prayer reception and special-visit areas can have different hours. Before travelling, check the official site for closures, ceremonies, work and current fees. Missing information is not treated as free admission or 24-hour access.

What do the World Heritage and National Treasure labels mean?

The labels identify confirmed designations. Open the label to see the exact property or buildings and their sources. World Heritage components and Japan’s National Treasures are different categories. A designation does not guarantee interior access. No label may mean the information has not been checked; it does not prove that no designation exists. Parent-shrine labels are not automatically assigned to subsidiary shrines.

Does a prayer category promise a result? Where can I learn etiquette?

Prayer categories describe religious and cultural traditions, not guaranteed outcomes. Our first-visit guide introduces general etiquette, but shrine practices vary. Follow the shrine’s signs and staff guidance.

How can I report an error?

Use the contact page to send the shrine name, page URL and the information you believe needs correction. A link to an official source helps us check it. Avoid sending sensitive personal information. Urgent visit changes should be checked directly with the shrine.
