Compare the visit scope, transport notes and prayer traditions of the shrines currently listed here. This is a selected guide, not a complete regional directory.
Our Yamagata entries offer two different journeys: Uesugi Shrine in central Yonezawa and the Sanjingosaiden hall at the summit of Mount Haguro near Tsuruoka. Compare town transport with mountain access. Haguro’s long stone-step approach is additional to the summit visit allowance.
The thatched Sanjingosaiden hall · The summit’s religious landscape · The nearby Kagami-ike pond
Estimated visit
45–75 min
Worship and a short summit-precinct walk; excludes the 2,446 steps, the lower five-storied pagoda, Gassan/Yudono visits, transport and prayers.
Getting there
For a summit visit, check buses from JR Tsuruoka Station to Haguro Sancho. Haguro Zuishinmon is the lower approach for the 2,446-step walk, not the summit stop. Check seasonal timetables and road conditions.
Shrine buildings within the former castle grounds · The moat and bridges · Kenshin-related history
Estimated visit
30–50 min
Ordinary worship and a short moat-side walk; excludes the Keishoden treasury, other museums, transport and queues.
Getting there
From JR Yonezawa Station, use a bus to Uesugi Jinja-mae (Uesugi Joshi-en), or allow around 10 minutes by car according to the shrine. Check the return bus timetable.
