Nonomiya Shrine

野宮神社

A small shrine in the Arashiyama walking area, known for its black torii and traditions of prayers for relationships. Its compact precinct fits a short stop; bamboo-area walking and busy-period queues need extra time.

What to see

  • Black torii made from unpeeled kunugi oak
  • Saiō and The Tale of Genji traditions
  • Nonomiya Daikokuten and the Kameishi prayer stone

A short history

The official account connects Nonomiya with the purification of imperial Saiō priestesses before their journey to Ise. It also identifies the shrine with the setting of the Sakaki chapter in The Tale of Genji. This tradition does not establish a precise founding year for the present site.

Before you go

Follow this shrine’s specific temizu instruction: wash your hands and omit mouth rinsing because the water is standing water. Relationship prayers and the Kameishi tradition do not guarantee that a wish will come true.
