Takeminakata no Kami (Kamisha Hongu)

A short history

Suwa Taisha preserves an ancient tradition of worship linked to the region’s kami and natural landscape. Kamisha Hongu worships a sacred mountain rather than having a conventional main sanctuary building. Its surviving buildings include the four-legged gate donated under Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1608 and a covered approach rebuilt in 1829.

Before you go

Hongu, Maemiya, Harumiya and Akimiya are separate destinations. The shrine states there is no ranking among them and no required visiting order. Onbashira here refers to the standing pillars; a festival procession is not an everyday attraction. Restoration work restricts part of the Hongu precinct from April 2024 until October 2027 (planned). Some structures may be screened or inaccessible; follow the official route notice.
