A short history
According to shrine tradition, Amaterasu was enshrined here about 2,000 years ago. Naiku is one of the two principal sanctuaries within Ise Jingu, a group of 125 shrines. The institution preserves a tradition of rebuilding its sanctuaries through the Shikinen Sengu ceremonies.
Before you go
The customary order is Geku followed by Naiku, but the official FAQ says there is no compulsory order. Follow the posted right-side walking rule at Naiku. Gravel paths and the long approach need suitable footwear. Observe no-photography signs; the shrine prohibits commercial filming and photography without prior permission. Prayer categories describe traditions and requested prayers, not promised outcomes.
