Nishinomiya

Nishinomiya Shrine

西宮神社

Choose Nishinomiya for Ebisu traditions, prayers for business prosperity and a compact visit between Osaka and Kobe. The Red Gate and long earthen wall are Important Cultural Properties; January's Toka Ebisu is a different, much busier experience.

A short history

The shrine's exact foundation date is unknown. Its tradition tells of fishermen bringing an image of Ebisu from Osaka Bay. Worship linked with fishing later expanded to market trade and business prosperity.

Before you go

Toka Ebisu is held January 9–11 and attracts large crowds. The January 10 Fukuotoko race is an organised ritual, not an invitation to run through the precinct. The photo shows a sacred-horse statue, not the main sanctuary.
