A short history
The shrine preserves an ancient foundation tradition; its earliest dates are traditional accounts rather than a securely established construction date. The official history records a move to the present site after a fire in 1480. It is the principal shrine of the wider Hakusan shrine network, with a separate sanctuary on the mountain summit.
Before you go
The official guide describes about 250 metres of uphill main approach and recommends the north approach parking area for wheelchair users. Confirm the onward route with the shrine; the map point is not a certified step-free entrance. The summit Okumiya requires a separate hiking plan.
