A short history

The shrine dates its foundation to 1627 on land then called Eitaijima. It developed with the surrounding Fukagawa neighbourhood and received support from the Tokugawa shoguns. Its official history also records authorised sumo tournaments in the precinct from 1684, before the principal venue later moved to Eko-in.

Before you go

The official notice schedules main-sanctuary renovation from March 2026 to June 2027, with the guest hall serving as the temporary sanctuary from May 28, 2026. The shrine also posts a mikoshi-storehouse renovation notice restricting close viewing, but that notice does not clearly state its year; confirm current viewing arrangements. Festival processions and sumo ceremonies are special events, not daily attractions. The kami listed here is the principal deity; the official history mentions eight others without naming them individually.
