A short history

Founded in 1627, it received the Toshogu name in 1646. The surviving shrine building, Karamon gate and Sukibei fence were commissioned by Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1651 and are Important Cultural Properties.

Before you go

The shrine interior is normally closed for conservation: paid precinct access is not interior admission. This is Ueno Toshogu in Tokyo, not Nikko Toshogu. The photograph shows the shrine before its later restoration.
