Katori

Katori Jingu

香取神宮

A wooded approach leads to a dark main sanctuary and vermilion gate in northeastern Chiba. Choose Katori for historic architecture and prayers associated with victory; allow for the local journey rather than treating it as a central Tokyo stop.

Enshrined kami

Futsunushi no Okami

A short history

Katori enshrines Futsunushi no Okami, a kami associated with the pacification of the land in Japanese mythology. Its present main sanctuary and romon gate were built under Tokugawa patronage in 1700 and are designated Important Cultural Properties.

Before you go

The Kanameishi stone belongs to a religious tradition, not evidence of protection from earthquakes. The National Treasure mirror in the museum is an object designation; the main sanctuary and gate are Important Cultural Properties.
