Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine

北口本宮冨士浅間神社

A World Heritage component with a cedar-lined approach, a large wooden torii and historic shrine halls. Choose it for Fuji's pilgrimage culture and woodland atmosphere, rather than Arakura's panoramic viewpoint.

A short history

Shrine tradition associates its beginnings with Yamato Takeru's worship of Mount Fuji; this is not a verified ancient foundation date. Fuji pilgrimage groups supported its later development, including major eighteenth-century rebuilding. Its main and two older sanctuaries are Important Cultural Properties.

Before you go

The visit estimate does not include the Yoshida climbing trail. This shrine is not Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine and does not offer the same pagoda-and-Fuji viewpoint. Its official FAQ explains that it has no summit Okumiya.
