Nikko Futarasan Shrine (Main Shrine)

日光二荒山神社(本社)

Choose the main Nikko Futarasan Shrine for local mountain-worship traditions, prayers for good relationships and a shorter stop beside Nikko Toshogu. The ordinary worship area and paid Shinen sacred garden are different parts of the visit. This guide covers the Sannai main shrine, not the lakeside Chugushi or the mountain summit.

A short history

Futarasan Shrine developed as a centre of mountain worship in Nikko. The city’s cultural-heritage guide dates the present main sanctuary to 1619 and describes subsequent work under the Tokugawa shogunate. The shrine forms part of the UNESCO-listed Shrines and Temples of Nikko. Shinkyo Bridge also belongs to the shrine, but is a separate stop away from the main precinct.

Before you go

This record is the Sannai main shrine beside Toshogu. It is not Utsunomiya Futaarayama Shrine, the lakeside Chugushi or the Mt. Nantai summit shrine. Map coordinates are a representative main-precinct point, not a verified step-free entrance. Prayer associations describe traditions, not guaranteed outcomes. Shinkyo is a separate visit and should not be counted as a bridge inside the main precinct.
