Ichikishima-hime no Kami
A short history
Munakata's three sanctuaries continue a tradition associated with maritime routes and the worship of three female kami. Hetsu-gu enshrines Ichikishima-hime no Kami. Its main sanctuary, rebuilt in 1578, and worship hall, built in 1590, are Important Cultural Properties; Hetsu-gu is a component of the World Heritage property inscribed in 2017.
Before you go
The route to Takamiya Saijo involves an uphill walk. Nakatsu-gu on Oshima needs a separate ferry trip. Okinoshima is not open to ordinary tourists. National Treasure status applies to museum objects, not to Hetsu-gu's shrine buildings.
